A Word about Malware and the Software Used to Catch it
If you receive an e-mail you didn't ask for, that promises to scan your computer for you to look for malware, never ever download from the link that's provided, even if it's free. If you should follow through, you would quickly find that it is not free. Such a program will tell you that you have malware on your hard drive, when there is nothing wrong with it at all. There are different variations of this scam. The more common ones will hijack your computer, and give you a phone number to call, in order to "fix" the problem for a fee. This "nag" will not allow you to do anything with your computer, other than shut it down. If you reboot, the nag will come right back up again, and will not let you alone. Once the scammer has your money, they might send you another link to download another program that would only cause you more grief, headache, and heartache.
We also recommend a rootkit detector, which are usually free, but you need to be careful with those. Depending upon how sensitive it is, not everything it catches should be removed, or you could do serious damage to your operating system. Hackers require a considerable amount of programming skill to write a successful rootkit, however, and they usually do not resort to anything more than simple viruses or trojans. There are plenty of anti-malware programs available on the internet, but there is no one program that catches everything. Many people recommend that you have at least two. Ask friends and colleagues what they use, or simply use a search engine to look for something reputable. We like Comodo and Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware, but different people swear by different brands. Some say freeware or open source is better, some say shareware is, that has a monthly or yearly subscription. If you don't like one, go on to another until you find something that's useful and dependable to you. This is not an Anti-Virus Update NotificationAlso see the updated entry below this one, from the same people.
